RIP, Wi Kuki Kaa

Arohanui
Sad news of the passing of Wi Kuki Kaa, veteran & pioneering Maori actor in movies, TV & stage both here & in Oz. A nice, short obit of a singular figure & noteworthy career. Thank you, RNZ. RIP, Mr Kaa. Farewell, e Hoa!

Haere ra, e hika, i te raumati e
i te paki ka takoto, ka mahana ra koe
i te moe pouaru na ko koe anake ia nau i hora atu
i te takapau e, no Hine-teiwaiwa i te ara i waho nei

Farewell, oh cherished one, blessed in summer's kindness
the sun himself seeks to console you with warmth,
succumb to the sleep of widows. For you alone,
Hine, the Weaving Goddess shall prepare her finest mat to carry you beyond

Opening stanza, verse 6, Rangiuia's Lament.

Update: A beautiful eulogy from The Maori Party:
"His people of Ngati Porou refer to Te Uranga o te Ra, the shining of the rays on Mount Hikurangi. With the passing of this radiant light of the Maori theatre world, the clouds have no doubt settled upon Mount Hikurangi, and upon us all, as we farewell this descendant of Ohinewaiapu."
